Afterglow is a two-person exhibition with the artist Lauren Cardenás that explores systems of colonialism, immigration, assimilation, and generational connection. Invoking “mother tongues” in multiple registers, we develop work in conversation with personal histories and broader ancestral histories – and in conversation with one another– to address our present moment. We mine personal histories, particularly religion and cultural mores passed through mothers and grandmothers. Grappling with these values and concerns for healthcare, labor, and reproductive rights and inequities, we use artistic process and material to engage with ancestral memory, find common ground, and support one another personally and professionally. This work was first curated by Courtney Howard, and displayed at Louisiana State University's Glassell Gallery; text by Courtney Howard.
